Weight is a cheap proxy for glass distribution and the first thing a COA reports.<\/p>\n    <p>The reference for every measurement is the approved sample, the spec sheet and the history, not the supplier's word. One buyer-side QA framed the rule for incoming bottles simply: chips or cracks get rejected, and the real question is whether the supplier documents its control limits at all (<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20220915191725\/https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/foodscience\/comments\/xf3xcw\/quality_control_for_refillable_glass_bottles_and\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">r\/foodscience, 2022, archived<\/a>). A supplier that cannot produce a spec with limits leaves you negotiating against a moving target.<\/p>\n    <h3>How many to sample, and what &ldquo;pass&rdquo; means<\/h3>\n    <p>Single-bottle judgment is half of acceptance; the lot is the other half. The usual framework is attribute sampling indexed by an acceptance quality limit, ISO 2859-1 (aligned with ANSI\/ASQ Z1.4). Three things matter.<\/p>\n    <ul>\n      <li>Defects are classed critical (safety), major (function: seal, fill, strength) and minor (cosmetic), each with its own AQL; critical sits at or near zero tolerance.<\/li>\n      <li>Sample size follows the lot: at General Inspection Level II, a 1,000-bottle lot draws 80 bottles, roughly where the quoted &ldquo;10% sample&rdquo; comes from.<\/li>\n      <li>Acceptance is a pair of numbers: at AQL 2.5 with that sample, the lot passes with 2 defectives and fails with 3. Ask for the statistical basis \u2014 which AQL, which inspection level, which classes. The same defect scattered across cases points to handling; concentrated in one corner of every case, it points to the factory or packer. Partition condition and your opening photos make the distinction stick. Over your agreed threshold: quarantine the lot, pull the COA and photos, then talk. Escalation clauses (full screening at the supplier's cost above an agreed rate) belong in the purchase order, where they cost nothing.<\/p>\n\n    <h2>Asking the Supplier Questions That Cost Nothing<\/h2>\n    <p>Everything above assumes the supplier has answers, and most RFQs never ask. These questions cost nothing and are the cheapest quality filter in packaging: an inspection story is either specific or it is nothing.<\/p>\n    <ol>\n      <li><em>What do you check in-line, and how often?<\/em> Ask for the mechanism, not the slogan: what happens on the production line during forming and at the annealing lehr exit, and what equipment does the checking (optical, dimensional, infrared)?<\/li>\n      <li><em>How do you sample finished lots, and what makes you screen 100%?<\/em> A sampling plan with a named standard and numbers: write it down. &ldquo;Strict quality control&rdquo;: the plan does not exist.<\/li>\n      <li><em>What is your delivery-quality record, and does a COA travel with every lot?<\/em> Ask to see a sample COA and a spec sheet with limits before you order, not after the first dispute.<\/li>\n    <\/ol>\n    <p>Ask the same three things of every supplier, in writing. The RFQ becomes a test: suppliers with real inspection systems answer with documents; the rest answer with adjectives.<\/p>\n    <p>None of this has to be taken on faith. A defect accepted at the dock costs four times over: screening labor, line downtime, shelf and consumer failures, and claims machinery. With an escalation clause, screening labor raises its own question: whose labor is it? Line downtime means minutes on a line that costs far more per hour than the bottles do. Shelf and consumer failures arrive when layer-three defects activate. The cheapest of the four is avoided by asking the previous section's questions.<\/p>\n    <p>The expensive version is the one where price won: a fraction of a cent saved per bottle on a supplier switch, paid back with a season of refunds, a PR problem, and customers who learned to inspect their own bottles.
