Look at the base of any perfume sprayer and you will see the whole debate in miniature. A thin metal collar grips the glass like a ring that was never meant to come off: that is a crimp neck. A collar that screws cleanly off in your hand: that is a screw neck. Both hold the same liquid, yet the two systems behave differently in shipping, on the shelf, and in the customer's hand. The difference starts in the glass itself, not in the pump. This guide walks from the bottle neck upward: how to tell the two apart, why one seals tighter, what the numbers on a spec sheet actually mean, and where the refill trend really leaves you.

Crimp Neck and Screw Neck: The Two Bottle Openings Behind Every Perfume Sprayer

The neck is the part of the bottle the closure grips, and the glass is shaped differently for each system.

A crimp neck is a smooth, straight neck with a raised ridge, a bead, moulded around it. The spray pump sits over the neck, and a metal collar (the ferrule, usually aluminium) is pressed down around the ridge by a crimping tool. The metal deforms into the groove and locks the pump on permanently. Retail fine fragrance, the eau de parfum and eau de toilette bottles that dominate duty-free shelves, is overwhelmingly crimp neck.

A screw neck carries continuous threads moulded into the glass. The sprayer or cap twists on and, just as easily, twists off. They appear on refillable bottles, travel atomizers and functional formats, and on some of the most expensive perfumes in the world, because screw-on is how a consumer refills.

One look separates them. Can the collar or cap come off without damage? If yes, it is threaded. If the metal ring would have to be destroyed, it is crimped. Decorative collars can mimic either look, so test the motion, not the finish.

Two quick clarifications. "Crimp" vocabulary also belongs to laboratory crimp-cap vials: same word, different world; this article is about perfume bottles. And a third option exists between the two: the crimpless or self-crimping pump, pressed on and held by an interference fit. It is mainly a small-batch choice.

Why Crimp Seals Tighter — and When a Threaded Neck Lets You Down

Every leak story you have heard about one system or the other comes down to how the seal is made. The two are not "better" and "worse": they fail under different conditions.

How a crimped ferrule creates a permanent seal

Crimping works by plastic deformation. The ferrule is squeezed around the neck ridge with far more force than any hand can apply, and it stays deformed: it cannot "unwind." The gasket inside the pump collar is held under constant, factory-set preload for the life of the bottle. Nothing the customer does later affects the seal.

That is why crimp is the default for fine fragrance. It is tamper-evident, vibration-proof, and consistent when the equipment is right. A production crimper applies the same force every time, and QC verifies the ferrule has no movement before packing.

The condition hiding inside that sentence is when the equipment is right. Hand crimpers and cheap tools concentrate force unevenly. Hobbyists who crimp by hand report roughly a third of their bottles breaking or being under-crimped, with the rest loose enough to let fragrance evaporate slowly (To Crimp or not to Crimp? The tool and the bottle's ridge tolerance decide whether you get its benefit. And once sealed, the bottle is sealed: refilling means destroying the ferrule.

How a threaded neck seals — and why it can loosen

A threaded pump seals by friction. The collar's threads engage the glass threads, and the tightening torque presses the gasket down. The seal can be excellent, but it is a maintained seal. Continuous vibration in transit, thermal cycling and handling relax the preload over time. The gap opens a few tenths of a millimetre, and alcohol vapour finds it.

The DIY community's experience is blunt about this. A long-running Basenotes thread on crimp-versus-screw leaking calls screw necks "a huge problem" and documents tape-wrapping workarounds (Crimp versus screw bottles and leaking, Basenotes, 2016). Makers on Reddit glue screw collars shut with superglue or epoxy to stop transit leaks (To Crimp or not to Crimp? The Ultimate Cap Battle for 5,000 Bottles, r/DIYfragrance, 2024). None of that means screw necks are inherently defective. It means the seal depends on thread tolerance, gasket choice, and assembly torque: variables controlled at the factory, not guaranteed by geometry. Keep torque and tolerances in your spec sheet and threaded bottles ship dry. Assume "screw = leaky" and you are generalising from uncontrolled assembly.

The third option: crimpless, self-crimping pumps

Crimpless pumps are pushed straight onto the neck and held by an interference fit. They need no machine: a hand press or even firm thumb pressure seats them, and their seal sits between the two systems (To Crimp or not to Crimp? But they lack tamper-evidence, removal destroys the pump (so no refills), and fine-fragrance lines rarely use them.

Reading the Numbers: Neck Sizes, Pump Match and the Decision Matrix

Product pages rarely say "crimp" or "screw." They say "FEA15" or "18-415," and if you order the wrong side of that slash, nothing will fit.

What the numbers actually mean

FEA15 and FEA18 are crimp-neck sizes. The FEA series comes from the aerosol and spray-glass standards of the European Aerosol Federation (the same dimensions appear in the EN 14854 spray-glass standard) and names the neck's outer diameter in millimetres. FEA15 is a 15 mm crimp neck; FEA18 an 18 mm one. FEA15 is the workhorse of fine fragrance, common from 10 ml up to roughly 50 ml and on some 100 ml bottles. FEA18 appears more often on 75–100 ml-plus formats. Volume does ではない tell you the neck size: some 100 ml bottles run FEA15; only the supplier's spec confirms it.

GPI thread finishes are screw-neck sizes. The code is two numbers. The first is the neck diameter in millimetres; the second, the thread form. In the 400-series continuous-thread family used across cosmetics, 410 means one and a half thread turns (the most common sprayer finish), while 415 means two full turns with deeper engagement and a stronger lock, favoured where leak prevention matters. So "18-410" and "18-415" are both 18 mm necks but are 互換性がない: the collar must match the full code, or it may screw on yet never seat (theworldorbust.com, "Stop leaks before they start with smart neck finishes").

The one rule that prevents most ordering disasters: crimp pumps and screw pumps are physically incompatible. A threaded collar cannot grip a smooth crimp ridge; a ferrule cannot bite threads. Decide the system first, then match every part to the same size code: bottle neck, pump collar, cap, and (for crimp) the crimping tool.

Each row ends in the same discipline: confirm the neck spec against the pump spec, then run a water-or-alcohol fill test. Invert bottles overnight, actuate each sprayer five to ten times, and check that a crimped ferrule shows zero movement when pressed.

Three checks separate a smooth launch from a re-order:

  1. Match the full code. Neck spec × pump spec × tooling: for crimp, the crimper size must equal the FEA size; for screw, the collar must carry the identical finish code.
  2. Test the seal before filling fragrance. Use water or alcohol, invert overnight, and actuate repeatedly. Test what you will ship, at the temperature your route will see.
  3. Ask the supplier for the numbers. Neck-finish specification, seal-test data, and the exact MOQ for stock, custom finishing, and new moulds. All three are usually different tiers.

Refillable, Single-Use or Both: What the Shift to Refill Means for Your Bottle Line

Here is the question underneath "crimp vs screw": what lifecycle is this bottle living? A single-use retail product wants the best permanent seal and tamper evidence: crimp. A bottle the customer is meant to open again wants a neck that allows it: screw. Sample and travel formats want small, simple, replaceable closures. The neck should follow the lifecycle, not the other way around.

The trend data says "refillable" is growing, and says just as clearly that it is not a takeover. One publisher sizes the refillable perfume bottle market at $2.8 billion in 2025, reaching $5.1 billion by 2034, a 6.9% CAGR (Dataintelo, 2025), against roughly 4.6% for the overall fragrance packaging market (Toward Packaging, 2026). (Adjacent "refillable" definitions vary wildly between publishers. Some scope mini travel atomizers into a far larger, slower-growing pool.) Faster than the average, nowhere near a replacement.

Expansion, not replacement.

Packaging suppliers are building refillable lines on threaded necks. Coverpla's bestselling Verdi bottle is offered in 100 ml with a crimped or screw neck, and its new 50 ml format ships refillable-only, with home-refill bottles using a gravity-fed screw-on connector that stops automatically when full. Established houses have swapped fixed-neck bottles for threaded refillables on specific lines. The pattern is deliberate: a refillable line inside a portfolio, not a portfolio-wide conversion. That is why suppliers keep offering the same bottle in both neck systems.

The old belief that threaded equals cheap does not survive contact with these launches either. Consumer-grade screw bottles on Amazon look cheap; a serif-labelled refillable with a threaded collar does not. The "cheap" signal was never the thread: it was the rest of the package. What remains true is that crimp still reads as the fine-fragrance default on a retail shelf, and that default expectation is itself a selling point.

One boundary matters more than the rest: do not build a refillable bottle without a refill channel. The screw neck's removable seal is only an asset if the customer has somewhere to get the refill: a store fixture, a subscription, a return-and-refill programme, or a sold refill bottle. Without one, you pay for a weaker default seal and give away tamper evidence in exchange for a story you cannot deliver.

Planning the Split: Structuring a Two-Track Closure Line

Put the four layers together and the practical shape of a launch appears: a two-track default; a crimp flagship that owns the retail shelf, and a threaded refill line where the brand has a real refill story to tell. The first gets everything the crimp mechanism gives you: factory-set preload, tamper evidence, zero customer maintenance. The second gets the screw neck's one genuine advantage: the customer can open it. Most brands that chase "refillable" as a company-wide switch quietly end up here anyway: running both, with screw reserved for the lines whose economics and story justify it.

For smaller brands the order of operations is the cost control. Test the refill idea on a stock threaded bottle at the stock MOQ before paying for a custom mould. If refills sell, the mould pays for itself. If they do not, you have learned it for the price of a small stock order instead of a tooling investment. And when you do tool up, ask whether the same mould can deliver the bottle in both neck systems. Dual-version bottles are a standard request under exactly this two-track logic.
